Job Description:

The Early Childhood Education (ECE) Consultant will design a pedagogical framework to guide the development, collection, and mobilization of teaching and learning materials for the Old Stoney Literacy Initiative. This role involves ensuring that literacy resources, including books, digital content, and interactive learning activities, align with early childhood learning principles and support language revitalization.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Curriculum & Framework Development

  • Design a comprehensive framework to guide the creation, adaptation, and use of Old Stoney language learning materials for young learners.

  • Ensure the framework is culturally responsive and aligned with Indigenous ways of knowing and learning.

  • Integrate early literacy best practices into teaching resources, ensuring they support foundational language skills.

2. Collection & Organization of Learning Materials

  • Identify existing teaching resources that can be adapted for the program.

  • Work with Elders, educators, and language specialists to gather culturally relevant materials (e.g., traditional stories, songs, rhymes, oral histories).

  • Develop guidelines for the organization and use of materials, ensuring accessibility for educators and families.

3. Learning Material Development & Adaptation

  • Provide pedagogical guidance for the creation of illustrated books, digital resources, and hands-on learning tools.

  • Design age-appropriate activities and lesson structures that integrate oral storytelling, play-based learning, and interactive literacy experiences.

  • Support content developers, illustrators, and digital designers in ensuring materials are engaging and developmentally appropriate.

4. Community & Educator Engagement

  • Work with early childhood educators, parents, and community members to understand their needs and gather feedback on teaching resources.

  • Provide training or guidance on how to effectively use materials in homes, classrooms, and community settings.

  • Ensure materials are designed for inclusive and intergenerational learning.

5. Documentation & Reporting

  • Develop a structured framework document to guide the long-term implementation of the literacy program.

  • Provide recommendations for scaling and sustaining the learning materials beyond the project timeline.

  • Deliver a final summary report outlining key learning material recommendations, framework design, and areas for future development.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Education: Degree in Early Childhood Education, Indigenous Education, Curriculum Development, Literacy Studies, or a related field.

  • 3+ years of experience in early childhood literacy, curriculum design, or Indigenous language education.

  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and traditional language learning approaches is preferred.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of early childhood pedagogy and language acquisition strategies.

  • Ability to develop culturally responsive and play-based learning materials.

  • Experience working with Elders, educators, and community groups to co-develop educational resources.

  • Excellent written and organizational skills for framework documentation and reporting.

Work Conditions & Schedule:

  • Part-time: 5-10 hours per week for 12 weeks.

  • Flexible schedule with occasional community meetings and collaboration with educators.

  • Remote and in-person work as needed to gather materials and engage stakeholders.
